Ghent, January 20, 2010 – ADAM Software closes 2009 with double-digit growth. In 2009, ADAM Software built a strong management team and secured a number of highly visible customer contracts. To continue this accelerated growth over the next three years and strengthen the enterprise for its customers, ADAM is raising its capital by securing a private placement. PARANA, the investment company of Guido Van der Schueren, will make up a major part of this placement, and ARKAFUND will invest in ADAM for a second time to enhance its shareholder's position.

ADAM Software is growing fast in the digital asset management (DAM) space at the mid and top end of the market. As DAM technology grows in importance globally, ADAM Software is well-positioned to develop into an international market leader. The capital raised by this investment round will solidify the working capital of the company, and allow for faster scaling of ADAM Software’s operations worldwide, including the opening of US offices.

The nomination of Guido Van der Schueren to the board of directors broadens ADAM Software’s strategic market knowledge to a global level. Guido’s thorough understanding of market needs in the graphic arts industry will be a substantial asset to ADAM Software as their market share grows and they expand in the US and elsewhere.

Guido also brings global experience with strategic and worldwide industry contacts to the board. Although from a different market sector, Guido has extended experience in the industry - over 34 years - and built Artwork Systems into a global leader in graphic arts software with a turnover of over 50 million USD (43 million Euro). ADAM will benefit greatly from the strategic industry contacts Guido brings, and future company development will be driven accordingly.

Faster and more efficient time-to-market for Elopak packaging with ADAM Software

Elopak, listed in the top three packaging companies worldwide, supports clients who are producing tens of different types of packages in at least as many countries. Faster time-to-market for Elopak packaging
For Elopak the implementation of ADAM Software represents the last link in a graphical automation process that started in 2000 with the set up of the company’s in-house prepress department. This development was stimulated by a KPMG research report, indicating that the time-to-market for Elopak packages was too long because too much time was lost in prepress. Niels Goossen, prepress development manager at the packaging giant from Terneuzen, the Netherlands, who was involved in this process from the outset, sees this as the basis of the powerful prepress and media management system distinguishing Elopak from its competitors today.

In 2000, digital asset management was still in its infancy and packaging printers entrusted their prepress work to specialist companies, hosting image archives comprising hundreds of directories with films. Elopak therefore decided to manage prepress in-house but also to work towards a fully online system which would offer Elopak sales offices and their customers an online insight into every phase of an order. As a result the new PakTrack system was created.

PakTrack keeps track of the history of an order and regulates the creation and approval of files. The system will be entirely based on ADAM, an innovative digital asset management system that connects the various prepress and image production systems to each other. Hereby it is also important to exchange data with the company’s internally developed ERP and Management Information System.

Flexibility and scalability
ADAM software will direct all processes between development and production. This is why ADAM is linked to the Elopak design and prepress systems which not only operate in Adobe PDF but also in ARTpro and other formats. Elopak uses this flexibility and scalability to allow programmers to add functionality to ADAM Software or to build a completely new user interface which makes it even easier for customers to work with PakTrack.

According to Goossen this is a feature he has not found with any other product and which saves a lot of money and time for Elopak. The company now determines priorities and budgets for these applications and does not have to wait until a software provider translates its wishes into a standard product. The ADAM characteristics are useful for the next phase of the development of PakTrack. As such, now that customers have become used to PakTrack’s options, they are coming with a list of requests for characteristics suited to their own needs. This means they no longer have to invest in hardware and software themselves and Elopak becomes their dedicated partner.

ADAM Software reduces make-overs to 30%
Goossens explains the advantages of ADAM media management for Elopak and its customers: “the time-to-market for a packaging item is normally weeks instead of months, all communication from the design to the production of packaging items goes online via a standard web browser without special software and customers see the status of all of their assignments in real time. The gain in time we want to achieve with ADAM Software will not be limited to the 70% saving in lead time. A substantial gain is also reached by reducing make-overs, an expensive and time consuming feature in packaging.”

Goossen concludes: “after introducing ADAM Software we can reduce make-overs to 30%. One important step is the further development of the remote proofing controlled by ADAM Software which we now offer in all of our sales offices worldwide. This allows customers not only to go online but also to approve their packaging order based on a ‘tangible’ proof. We are this way placing automation at the service of our customers and they can reap the benefits of our investments.”

“ADAM DocMaker-users can easily switch from document mass production to highly targeted, customized marketing collateral. Microsoft Business Case: Developers at ADAM Software attain faster results with Visual Studio Team System

Michael Vanhoutte, Sr. Architect ADAM SoftwareMicrosoft published a case about the use of Microsoft Team Foundation Server at Adam Software. We've been using this product for several years now, but a little over a year ago Pieter Gheysens from Compuware (now from Sparkles) helped us to improve the way in which we use Team System. Because of this, we have been able to significantly improve the reliability of our build processes.

Since mid 2008, the developers at ADAM Software have been working with Microsoft Visual Studio Team System 2008. Efficiency has greatly improved as a consequence, allowing them to react more swiftly to acute problems and produce new product versions faster. They no longer have to devote much time to manual, routine tasks and can therefore devote their time to the real development work. Customers also enjoy a better product and a better service, while ADAM Software can fulfil the requirements of strict SLAs – an important benefit with large brand customers such as Lego, Warner Bros and Philips.

ADAM Software is an important worldwide supplier of Digital Asset Management (DAM) software. The latter guides the management, conversion and distribution of cross-media files and processes. Customers can use it to manage their image databases, generate product catalogues or process full cycles of marketing material. Interaction with customers and the potential customization of the software is carried out via a network of local partners. ADAM Software itself devotes itself entirely to improving the technology.

Switching between product versions
“We often have to switch from one product version to another because we also continue to provide support for our customers on older versions of the software. In the past, that switching used to be extremely cumbersome,” tells Michael Vanhoutte, Senior Software Architect at ADAM Software. “It was therefore essential to be able to work more efficiently on the different versions.”

In addition, ADAM Software also wanted both its development teams – one for the framework and one for the user applications – to work with the same development environment and tools. That was not the case in the past, which had a negative impact on collaboration and maintenance. The organization therefore decided to install new software to better support the developers in their work: Microsoft Visual Studio Team System. “This software was our first choice from the very beginning. The only thing lacking was the expertise and time to achieve an optimal integration of the technology amongst our teams,” explains Michael Vanhoutte. “After a thorough screening of the market, we ended up at Compuware. They already had experience with similar projects and are also a Gold Certified Microsoft Partner, which was an added bonus for us.”

Automatic generation of installation packages
In the first phase, ADAM Software presented its requirements to Compuware. “We then advised them with regard to the product configuration and the way in which they could best use the software,” says the .NET Team Lead at Compuware Belgium. “By mid 2008 we had installed a central development environment for both development teams. The project was completed in a couple of weeks. The development environment is now optimized for advanced version management and makes it easy to work on multiple product versions simultaneously. Moreover, the Team Foundation Server automatically generates installation packages based on the entered source code.”

These installation packages serve firstly to extensively test the ADAM software and ultimately form the basis for the package that is supplied to the customer. “In the past, there was a lot of manual work involved in these processes,” says Michael Vanhoutte. “It used to take us a whole day to produce an installation package. Now it just takes one hour. We have even automated a number of tests which also saves a considerable amount of time.”

Better customer support and shorter development cycles
Switching between product versions is now also a lot faster than before. “We used to lose a lot of time in setting up specific, older environments. That is now done in a matter of seconds,” says Michael Vanhoutte. “As a result, we are in a better position to meet our SLAs for product support. That is extremely important given that we work for large, demanding customers. Also for our partners – who are often in the firing line when problems arise, our more efficient working methods imply a massive improvement.”

Now that the developers at ADAM Software spend less time on manual processes, they can devote more of their energies to development work. The support provided by Visual Studio Team System therefore has a marked impact on the quality of the end result. At the same time, everything is a lot faster. “In the past, it took us two to five days to get from the source code to an installation-ready package. Now all we need is a day,” explains Michael Vanhoutte. “On top of that, the Team Foundation Server’s standard reports enable us to closely monitor where we are in the development process.”

Simpler, cheaper maintenance
Seeing as both development teams no longer work in separate development environments, maintenance has become simpler and cheaper. Moreover, there is now an exchange of knowledge possible between the teams regarding use of the software. “The developers are happy because they have less repetitive work. We can therefore do more with the same number of developers.”

ADAM Software can now easily maintain the development environment itself, without the intervention of Compuware, who also provided a user manual. “We have been put on the right track, so we now know very well how to work with Visual Studio Team System. And we have achieved our goal: we work faster and with greater professionalism and are able to serve our customers better. As a small player in a growing sector, it is essential that we be alert and work efficiently in order to be successful,” concludes Michael Vanhoutte.

ADAM Software unveiled ADAM 4.3 – the latest version of their enterprise Digital Asset Management platform. With the release of 4.3 ADAM delivers all the ADAM known strengths such as infinite taxonomy, robust media workflows, all format support,  flexibility, scalability, …, with even better search options, broad video support with large preview capabilities and a unique rules-concept to automatically trigger workflows.

  • Broader video support enables enhanced video ingest and video preview, support for all common video and audio formats, including auto creation of previews.

    “ADAM 4.3 will make your motion library as lively as it is meant to be. We've made sure that browsing your footage will be as swift and efficient as querying your digital artwork library.

    Centrally stored footage is transcoded into a preview format within a given timespan, e.g. a 54" HD film will be transcoded to a lowres movie for the whole or for a given duration of the movie. A nifty tool that can be a real timesaver. The preview plays in the embedded Microsoft Silverlight player, or -using the Adam provider model- in any player of your choice (Flex, QuickTime,...).

KODAK Smart Review System Provides Flexible Approval Workflow for ADAM’S Digital Asset Management System in the EAMER Region

ADAM Software, the European-headquartered global vendor of Enterprise Digital Asset Management (DAM) systems, is integrating the KODAK Smart Review System into its own system in order to provide customers with a high resolution online approval facility.

The trend in asset management is towards a fully integrated workflow, with digital asset management systems evolving into complete Asset Life Cycle Management (ALCM) tools. During the life cycle of an asset, from creation and approval to distribution and archiving, very flexible and variable approval workflows are executed. Online proofing is an important element of this extension of DAM system functionality.

The Smart Review System integrates Kodak’s proprietary imaging and color technology into a server-based proofing engine, enabling high-resolution on-screen proofing. Because the server “streams” just the information that is needed, users can view high-resolution images quickly and easily over any internet connection.
